I thought i read somewhere that Claremont and Lee had intended for Gambit to be a spy for Mr. Sinister, but in the preview pages Jean picks up some stray thoughts from him, and he’s just debating weather or not to stay, and weather or not he likes Storm the way she currently is. Of course if Sinister were to plant a spy, he would have to do something to conceal it from the telepaths anyway.

Now I’m sure that Gambit and Storm are going to be a couple. And the mystery is resolved about Wild Child/Sabertooth: it’s Sabretooth.

As far as the Sabretooth/Wild Child character, it could be a mutated Wolverine for all we know. The other two characters not mentioned could be Sage and Psylocke.

Very interesting, especially the cast list and the fact that they aren’t revealing for certain the identity of the Sabretooth/Wild Child character! Hopefully they do something to make Nick Fury a bit more sympathetic. Thank you for the link to the CBR interview!

Nick Fury gets involved because Magneto stole some nuclear weapons and threatened the earth during X-Men 1-3 and that really scared a lot of people and nations so that’s why he will be killed by the X-Men early on.

And here’s something from Wizard magazine:

WIZARD: Is X-Men Forever going to focus on solely the Blue Team of characters depicted in those first three issues of X-Men?

CLAREMONT: There is no Blue Team and no Gold Team. We are focusing in on a group of characters who are defined by the circumstances and situation that the X-Men find themselves in. They are getting a new regular member of the team, a sort of quasi-government figure by the name of Nick Fury.

WIZARD: Wow! He was actually in the first three issues of X-Men when they came out.

CLAREMONT: And, oddly enough, he’s sticking around! A guy that looks like he’s going to live forever could be considered a quasi-mutant. But, the point is that the X-Men’s relationship with the world is about to change markedly. The X-Men got involved in a situation where Magneto became a nuclear power and threatened to use those nukes from orbit. The reality exists that if he could do it, anyone else could do it. One might be able to fudge things in the world of 1991 and say that terrorists that threaten the safety of the world don’t get away with it…but they do. That’s no longer a valid argument today. You have a world which has just seen Magneto and a team of mutants steal an entire nuclear submarine’s payload of nuclear missiles, establish himself as an orbital nuclear power, threaten to use those missiles and then get defeated by the X-Men. The premise that we’re starting with is that the great powers of the world are probably not going to stand for that anymore.

WIZARD: A couple of characters you created towards the end of your original run on Uncanny, like Gambit, have had origins implemented that differ from your original intentions. Are these original back stories going to appear now?

CLAREMONT: The Gambit in X-Men Forever is the Gambit who was in Uncanny up to #278 and X-Men #1 through #3. He’s technically not even an official X-Man. He’s just been hanging around for a bunch of weeks and, as we establish in the preview, he’s not even sure he wants to stay. He’s playing it by ear. Circumstances will arise that may make up his mind for him, but everything is considerably more fungible. Nothing in this is going to be like what you’re used to seeing.

I’ve also heard that they plan to kill someone off fairly quickly to emphasize the mortality of this AU, though not specifically that it would be Magneto (interesting if so but less of an impact than losing one of the protagonists). If what you say is true about Nick Fury, I may have a hard time suspending my disbelief of why the X-Men would willingly direction from him.

I read that the X-Men Forever will kill off Magneto and afterwards that Nick Fury will be involved with the X-Men, possibly giving them missions to occasionally go on.

I was actually wondering the same thing about Sabretooth/Wild Child. On the one hand, the body looks too bulky to belong to Wild Child, but the face looks too feral to belong to Sabretooth. I really enjoyed the interaction between Rogue and Sabretooth in the AoA books (I thought he made a great and interesting hero), so I’m hoping we’ll see more of him.

You might be right about Claremont choosing to pair Gambit with someone other than Rogue, but I know it would be a big turn off to me and many others. Storm and Gambit have never made sense to me as a couple. They’re just so different with very different outlooks on life.

Claremont is known to have a special place in his heart for Jean Grey, so I imagine you’ll be pleased with how big a part she plays in this new series!

What I have been wondering since the announcement of X-Men Forever is about Gambit. Perhaps Claremont might not even bring him and Rogue together — instead he might bring Gambit and Storm together and make them a couple instead.

One other thing that I have been wondering is whether that’s Sabertooth or Wildchild on the cover art? What do you think?

And as a Rogue fan, I myself do like the new costume and wonder where her character will go from here.

Most of the characters that have been brought together are favorites of mine, and it’s been a while since Jean has been seen so that has me quite excited about this new series.
